Y se nos fue de las manos...

Chicos/as:

Hasta luego, chicos/as.

King Minos lived in Crete and he was the king there. He had 2 daughters: Phaedra and Ariadne. Every year king Minos asked king Aegeus to send 14 adolescents as a tribute to the Minotaur. When Theseus, King Aegeus's son, arrived in Crete, King Minos thought he was either very brave man or very stupid because it was very difficult to kill the Minotaur.
The night when Theseus arrived in Crete, King Minos had a big party because he thought that Theseus was not going to kill the Minotaur in the labyrinth.

"Theseus and the Minotaur"

Theseus and the Minotaur

Retold by Florencia, Lautaro and Paula

Many, many years ago, in ancient Greece, there lived a young boy called Theseus. He was king Aegeus and Aethra's son and he was born in Troezen where Aethra lived. King Aegeus was the king of Athens. King Aegeus didn’t want to take Theseus to Athens with him because it was dangerous. Before he went back to Athens, he buried his sword and sandals under a rock and told Aethra to show them to Theseus when he was 16. On Theseus’s 16th birthday, the young boy moved the rock, found his father’s sword and sandals and travelled to Athens to meet his father.
During the journey, he saved many people from robbers; so the Athenians welcomed him like a hero. After that, he went to meet his father. At first, King Aegeus was not sure about his son, but when he saw his sword and sandals, he recognized Theseus as his child. The following day, King Aegeus and Theseus went for a walk in Athens. There, Theseus noticed that the people weren’t happy. His father explained to him that every year fourteen young Athenians had to go to Crete. The teenagers were a tribute to King Minos, for his son’s death in Athens. Every year when the young Athenians arrived in Crete, the guards took the Athenians into a labyrinth. There lived the Minotaur, a creature with a bull’s head and a man’s body. The young Athenians could never escape from the labyrinth. When Theseus heard this terrible story, he wanted to kill the Minotaur and set Athens’s free. So he decided to go with the young Athenians to Crete. King Aegeus was very sad because Theseus was his only son, but he had to accept his son’s brave decision. Before setting sail for Athens, King Aegeus gave Theseus a pair of sails in the harbour. He told Theseus to put the sails up when they returned to Athens to show that he was safe.

Are all the versions of a mith the same ?

ARE ALL VERSIONS OF A MITH THE SAME ?
We read the myth Theseus and the Minotaur in English and in Spanish. The two versions are not exactly the same.
One of the differences is the name. In the English version it is "Theseus and the Minotaur" but in the Spanish version it is "Theseus and the labyrinth".
Another difference is that the stories start and finish in different ways. For example, in the English version, the story starts in Troezen where Theseus lived when he was a boy while in the Spanish version the story begins when Theseus arrives in Crete to kill the Minotaur. Then, the English version finishes when Theseus arrives in Athens and he becomes the King while in the Spanish version he story ends when Theseus kills the Minotaur and he comes out of the labyrinth.
The number of characters is also different. Some characters do not appear in the Spanish version. These are the characters that are in Troezen and Athens in the English version. For example: Aethra, King Aegeus and in Crete, Phaedra (Ariadne’s sister)
Another important difference is that there is an element of magic in the Spanish version. The sword and the ball of thread that Ariadne gives Theseus are magical .This is not like this in the English version.
So we can say that there are different versions of the same myth but the message is the same: a true hero has many difficulties in life but he always tries hard and always risks his life to save other people.

Thesues, a true hero.

King Aegeus.

King Aegeus

By Gabriela and Facundo

He lived in Athens and he was the king there. He had a son called Theseus . King Aegeus married Aethra, who lived in Troezen.
When his son left Athens to go to Crete and kill the Minotaur there, he felt sad but he gave him a pair of white sails and asked him to put the white sails up when he came back, if he was alive.
When Theseus returned safe from Crete, he forgot to put up the white sails. Aegeus was waiting for him on Cape Sounio and when he saw the black sails, he thought his son Theseus was dead .He was so sad that he jumped into the water and drowned. To this day, this sea is called the Aegean Sea in honour of King Aegeus

I hope Theseus comes back safely and brings victory to Athens.
